During the Great Depression, a manipulative emcee runs a dance marathon with a cash prize, recruiting desperate contestants to keep going as conditions worsen. Among them are a failed actress, a middle-aged sailor, a delusional blonde, and a pregnant girl, all pushed to physical and emotional limits.
