A stranger offers help to a down-on-his-luck gambler in Reno, drawing him into casino life and a new sense of belonging. As the pair’s relationship develops, the gambler also forms ties with a vulgar casino regular and a waitress who complicates everything.

"Hard Eight? This is easily a hard 8.5 out of 10. Phillip Baker Hall is so soulful, calm and cool in this movie it’s gripping to watch, even though it’s not particularly heavy in plot.
