In Edo-period Japan, a gifted but troubled swordsman returns to his clan after an unexpectedly light punishment and tries to rebuild his life while caring for a young relative. As grief and duty weigh on him, he develops a distinctive sword technique and is drawn toward a looming duel with a feared rival.
