During the Italian Renaissance, Pope Julius II commissions an influential artist to create statues for his tomb, then abruptly shifts the commission to a major mural in the Sistine Chapel. The artist hesitates, wrestles with doubts and inspiration, and clashes with the pope’s relentless demands as the historic painting threatens to stall.
