In Iran’s Kurdish hills near the Iraqi border during the Iran-Iraq war, itinerant teachers carry blackboards on their backs in hopes of finding students. Two teacher groups encounter displaced elders and children moving with contraband, while soldiers and danger loom close, raising the question of whether teaching can still matter.
