Picking up after the previous adventure, Sharpe and Harper travel toward Madras when they run into an East India Company baggage train in dangerous territory. A feared bandit leader controls the area, and an attack forces Sharpe to take charge, driving the group deep through enemy ground while they try to become proper soldiers, with romance along the way.
