Death to Smoochy has the Wolf of Wall Street or Bad Santa problem for me. It’s meant for audiences to generally laugh with the villains of the story at the expense of its message. There’s a clever premise in the underbelly of children’s television, but how the story unfolds doesn’t work. I like DeVito’s quirky crime sensibilities, and the line “I never saw Venice” is fantastic, but Smoochy is just too much of a mess. 🦏🦏 / 🦏🦏🦏🦏🦏.
